Where I used to work there was a cunning flock of rainbow lorikeets who had worked out that a quick sugar fix was to visit the local cafe and steal all their sugar sachets off the outside tables, tearing open the end of the long cylindrical paper sweetener and pouring the contents straight down their gullets! When the cafe got wise to their goings on and stopped putting the sugar outside the very clever birds used their beauty to distract unsuspecting cafe patrons. One would land nearby or dangle from the umbrella, catching everyone’s attention, while their mate would sneak in and steal the cake off your plate! This painting is inspired by them, the cheeky, naughty, stunning birds.
This painting has been shown at Bundaberg Regional Gallery as part of their You, Me and a Cup of Tea Exhibition from the 2nd of February until the 19th March 2017.
