I will be honest, this year it has been quite difficult to find things which were uplifting to paint. Don’t get me wrong, I still love where I live, but it has been a challenging Summer. All the plants and animals where suffering through the drought and dust and smoke… and then our grevillea robusta (silky oak) flowered. The best flowering it has ever had and all the birds, bees and butterflies had a party from dawn until dusk, when the sugar gliders, squirrel gliders, geckos and possums took over. It brought so much joy to so many creatures… or maybe just a sugar rush… that it was definitely the most uplifting sight this Summer. The vase was pointed out to me by Chester Neale the world renowned ceramicist who lives in Gulgong (of all places). He saw it in a local old wares shop and thought that it would be perfect for one of my paintings… well how could I resist… it came home with me and now is in it’s first painting…
