This is a painting of the only non-Mudgee region native, although I have seen the odd escaped pets flying freely over the skies of Mudgee. This naughty rainbow lorikeet is based on the colony which hang out at the Art Gallery of NSW and would dangle upside-down from the umbrellas at the cafe and steal the sugar sachets from people’s coffee cups. They became very adept at tearing the tops off the paper cylinders and pouring pure refined sugar down their gullet all while dangling upside down entertaining the tourists. I decided this little fellow needed to get his sugar fix from a more civilised source… macarons on a pretty cake stand of course!
